The Hockey Show - Episode Nine

The Hockey Show is back on the airwaves at UMFM tonight, and we have another special guest to welcome to the show. Professional hockey player Kyle Hagel joins Beans and I on the show tonight, and we're excited for him to speak about his new iPhone app called Shnarped Hockey app! You may have read about this app earlier in the week here on HBIC as I poked around in the app and ran it through some rigorous testing (aka "used it for about an hour"), so we thought it would be good to get Mr. Hagel on to discuss this new venture!

We'll also be talking AHL hockey with Kyle Hagel as he is currently signed with the Hamilton Bulldogs, and we'll touch on other cities he's played in throughout his career. But we want to get the word out about his app, so we'll talk with him about his technology background, his working with former hockey player Dustin Sproat, and what the process was like in getting his app published through the iTunes store!

Join us tonight from 6:00-6:30PM CT (7:00-7:30 ET) for this interview! If you can't swing those times to listen on 101.5 UMFM in Winnipeg or over the internet, the podcast will go up approximately one hour after airing!

We're excited to have Kyle Hagel on the show, so please tune in if you have an iPhone so you can download the FREE Shnarped Hockey app! If you're on Twitter, make sure you follow the Shnarped team at "@shnarped", and interact with us live through Twitter by tweeting us at "@TeebzHBIC"!

MO' BRO: We've seen Mike Gartner's, Wendel Clark's, Dirk Graham's, Grant Fuhr's, Dennis Maruk's, Larry Robinson's, and Mike Ramsey's moustaches, and HBIC has another great 'stache to present today. While his fall from grace was quick and rather painful to hear about, Derek "Turk" Sanderson had one heck of a moustache during his run in professional hockey.

There's no denying that Derek Sanderson was one of the best players in the NHL for a short period of time before a few vices sent him down a dark path. Sanderson won the Calder Trophy as best rookie in 1968, and added a pair of Stanley Cups to his resume in 1970 and 1972. However, alcohol and a very extravagant nightlife contributed to a rapid decline in both his health and his hockey skill, and he found himself a hockey nomad after he was kicked off the WHA's Philadelphia Blazers. It was his trade to the New York Rangers where his alcoholism turned into a serious problem, and it led to his move to the St. Louis Blues (check out Bob Plager's 'stache to Sanderson's left!), followed by the Vancouver Canucks, and finally ending his NHL career with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Through it all, though, the Sanderson 'stache remained, and it is still one of the better moustaches to have been seen in the NHL.

From 1968 through to 1972, I would take Derek Sanderson in a heartbeat over hundreds of other centerman simply based on skill alone. Sanderson's moustache, though, set him apart, and he was officially named as the first player to take to the ice with some upper lip fuzz! You have to include the first man with the 'stache on the Mo' Bro All-Stars - he's a trailblazer! If you want to get in on the action, head over to the Movember page and get registered so your 'stache can stand amongst these great 'staches!

Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!
