Lest We Forget

It's a big day across North America as the bravest men and women on this continent are remembered for their sacrifice and honoured for their service as part of the Armed Forces. My grandfather was a member of the Canadian Air Force, and I feel proud to know that he served his country proudly in Europe for many years before settling down in the Ottawa region. While I don't have any servicemen or women in my family now, I still feel that my grandfather deserves to be recognized for putting his life on the line, and today is the day where we all can honour those who put their lives on the line for our freedoms.

If the day itself doesn't evoke any emotions from you, perhaps hockey can help. More specifically, perhaps the Boston Bruins can help. The Bruins honoured the men and women of the US Armed Forces by bringing the parents of one of the current servicemen for a ceremony to honour their son and all the other brave men and women currently serving as well as those who may have passed on.

Darren and Lori Jacobs, parents of Lt. Charles Jacobs who is serving in Afghanistan as part of the 182nd infantry of the Massachusetts Army National Guard, were the honoured guests on Friday night. Check out this video, and what the Bruins did for Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs.

Holy cow. Is there a dry eye out these? As soon as Mrs. Jacobs breaks down, I felt the lump in my throat. How great is it that the Bruins brought Lt. Jacobs home while on leave to be part of the ceremony? High marks for the Bruins. The hockey gods will smile upon this franchise for going above and beyond the call of duty as a hockey team on this one.

To all the brave men and women who are currently serving abroad and at home, HBIC holds you in the highest esteem. You are the backbone of our nations, and HBIC will support you where ever and whenever you're called upon at any time. To those who have lost a fallen hero, HBIC wishes you nothing but the best. Your hero will always remain a hero to this writer for the sacrifice he or she made in the name of freedom.

Until next time, raise your sticks high in honour of the men and women serving in out Armed Forces! HBIC salutes you!
